Mint Julep, The Great Gatsby

Experience the 1920s glamour with Mint Julep, the iconic cocktail that captures The Great Gatsby's opulent world and Southern elegance.

About the Cocktail and the Film

The Mint Julep stands out as an iconic cocktail representing the opulent, extravagant, and yet melancholic world of the 1920s, alongside the film The Great Gatsby. The luxurious parties, jazz music, and extravagant lifestyles at the heart of the film perfectly align with the refreshing yet potent character of the Mint Julep. This classic cocktail from the American South also symbolizes the emptiness and transience behind Gatsby's glamour.

Mood

Refreshing, aristocratic, and nostalgic.

The Mint Julep provides a refreshing sensation at first sip, while leaving a strong and deep impression with its underlying bourbon character. Just like the glamour in The Great Gatsby; bright on the outside, complex on the inside.

Mint Julep - The Great Gatsby

  • 10-12 fresh mint leaves
  • 0.3 oz (10 ml) simple syrup
  • Crushed ice
  • Plenty of fresh mint sprigs
  • Silver or metal cup (preferably a julep cup)

Preparation Steps

  1. Add the mint leaves and simple syrup to the glass.
  2. Gently press the mint leaves to release their aroma without crushing them.
  3. Fill the glass with crushed ice.
  4. Add the bourbon and stir gently.
  5. Top with more ice and garnish with mint.

Bartender's Secret

When preparing a Mint Julep, never crush the mint aggressively. Otherwise, bitter flavors will emerge. The colder the glass, the more balanced and elegant the cocktail will be—just like the flawless details at Gatsby's parties.
